CEN's 2022-2028 Internal Funding

Thanks to the financial support of the FRQNT, the Regroupement stratégique du Centre d'études nordiques (RS-CEN) has adopted a new funding program to foster collaboration and synergy among its members. Here are the different programs.  

CEN Joint Project Grant

Description and objectives

Grant for the start-up of new research initiatives led by at least 2 regular members of the CEN. The objectives of this internal grant program are: 1) to encourage the creation of new collaborations between CEN members, 2) to support existing collaborations, and 3) to foster the integration of new regular status CEN members at the beginning of their career. Submitted projects that involve more than one institution will be an asset in obtaining the grant. Institutional representation in the grant will also be considered in the evaluation of submitted projects.

Funding offered

3 to 5 grants of a maximum value of $15,000/year each. Possibility of renewal for a second year depending on the progress of the research team.

Terms and conditions

Call for joint projects:

Competitive, normally once every two years. Applications open to CEN regular members only.

Eligible Expenses:

  • Purchase or transportation of equipment in the North.
  • Bursary for graduate student or postdoctoral fellow.
  • Remuneration of research assistants (student personnel).
  • Travel and living expenses in the North.

Non-eligible expenses:

  • Salary of research professionals.
  • Travel costs to attend conferences.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Team consisting of at least two CEN regular members.
  • Only new research initiatives are funded, but funding received may be complementary to other sources of funding (e.g. a recently funded FRQNT team project).
  • This funding may be used to add a new "component" or "phase" to an existing research project. It is essential to justify the innovative and incremental aspect of the proposed initiative to the existing project.

Deliverables (mid-term and end of project):

  • Adhesion to the CEN for of all HQP working on the joint project during the 1st year of this project.
  • List of all CEN members involved, including those with collaborative status.
  • Financial report.
  • Progress report (500 words).
  • List of scientific or public communications - publications, reports, presentations, vignettes, dissertations, theses, etc. (where financial support from the CEN and FRQNT must be clearly identified).
  • List of media coverage.
  • List of grants obtained in connection with this funding.
  • Photos to illustrate the project with the right for the CEN to use these photos to illustrate the research work of its members in the North.

Evaluation criteria

  • Adequacy with the scientific program of the CEN
  • Quality of the project
  • Composition of the team

CEN Scholarship Supplements

Description and Objectives

Scholarship support for student members of the NEC who are doing interdisciplinary work under the co-supervision of at least 2 regular members of the NEC.

Funding available

  • 2 doctoral scholarship supplements of $10,000 for one year with the possibility of renewal for an additional year based on the scholar's progress.
  • 2 Master's scholarship supplements of $5,000 for one year only.

Terms and Conditions

Call for proposals:

Normally once every 2 years. Applications must be submitted by student members of the CEN and supported by 2 co-supervising regular members. Although not required, a scholarship supplement application may be linked to a joint project grant application. If so, do not complete this form but only the scholarship supplement portion of the joint project funding application form.

Eligibility requirements:

  • The research project must be aligned with NEC scientific programming.
  • A student member of the NEC who receives a scholarship supplement from the NEC-RS must be supervised by two regular members of the NEC.
  • Student members of the NEC who receive a graduate scholarship from the FRQNT, NSERC or the Garfield Weston Foundation are not eligible.
  • At the time of application, the NEC student member must have been enrolled in a master's program for

                o Master's degree for 4 semesters or less,

                o Doctoral program for 6 semesters or less to be eligible for a one-time renewable award,

                o Doctoral program for 7 to 9 semesters to be eligible for a non-renewable award.

Deliverables (at mid-term and at the end of the project)

  • CEN student membership is required for supplement payment.
  • Progress report (500 words).
  • List of scientific or public communications - publications, reports, presentations, vignettes, dissertations, theses, etc. (where financial support from RS-CEN and FRQNT is clearly identified).
  • List of media coverage.
  • Photos to illustrate the project with the right for the RS-CEN to use these photos to illustrate the research work of its members in the North.

Evaluation criteria

  • Quality of the project
  • Composition of the management team (new collaborations, interdisciplinary projects, the presence of regular members of the CEN at the beginning of their career and members coming from different institutions will be judged favorably).

CEN Research Infrastructure Access Program

Each summer, the CEN charters a helicopter in the Hudson Bay area to support the research activities of its regular and collaborative members around the Qaujisarvik network of research stations. This is a major logistical operation costing close to $120,000, of which $50,000 comes from the RS-CEN grant. The remaining amount is covered by CEN members who wish to use this helicopter for their research work. Regular members in the early stages of their careers and team projects will be favored in receiving this financial support. An announcement of this program is sent by e-mail to all CEN members in February or March of each year.

 

CEN Joint Publications Program

Description and objectives

To provide financial support for joint publications by two or more regular members of CEN.

Funding available

Reimbursement of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $2000.

Terms and Conditions

Submission:

On a first-come, first-served basis until available funds are exhausted. Only regular members may apply.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Type of publications accepted: peer-reviewed scientific articles or books. Vulgarization articles, guides or reports may be considered if the anticipated impact is significant.
  • Two regular members of the CEN must be listed as principal authors.
  • CEN membership must be indicated in the authors' affiliations.
  • Financial support from the CEN must be acknowledged.
  • In the case of a peer-reviewed article, the article must be published under an open license (Creative Commons "Attribution" license (CC BY) or equivalent).
  • Only one financial support per year per regular status member.

Eligible expenses:

  • Open access publication costs in a peer-reviewed scientific journal that meet one of the following criteria (to be verified with the Journal checker tool):

               o For immediate open access (non-subscription) journals, publication costs are eligible (golden path; full open access category in the Journal checker tool)

               o For transformative subscription journals (orange track; Transformative agreement or transformative journal in the Journal checker tool)

  • Exceptionally, professional fees (for graphic design, layout, translation, etc.) for a book or a high-impact scientific article published in journals not eligible for payment of open access publication fees.

  • An electronic copy of the publication must be submitted to CEN.

Evaluation criteria

  • Adequacy with the scientific program of CEN.
  • Anticipated impact of the publication.
  • Number of CEN members involved in the initiative.

Financial support for CEN events

Description and objectives

To provide one-time financial support to regular NEC members who organize events or host guest speakers of interest to the SR-NEC community. It is expected that the NEC and FRQNT will gain visibility in exchange for this financial contribution.

Funding offered

Between $500 and $1000.

Terms and Conditions

Submission:

On a first-come, first-served basis until available funds are exhausted. Only regular members may apply.

Eligibility requirements:

  • Knowledge transfer activity related to the scientific programming of the RS-CEN.
  • The event is of interest to several RS-CEN members.

Deliverables

  • Program of the event.
  • Evidence of RS-CEN visibility.
  • List of ENC members who participated in the event.

Evaluation criteria

  • Adequacy with the scientific programming of the CEN.
  • Number of NEC members involved in the initiative and number of NEC members who participated.
  • Level of visibility for the RS-CEN.
