General Overview

The brand new Qikiqtarjuaq research centre (67° 33' N, 64° 01' W) is located in the Inuit community of Qikiqtarjuaq on the west coast of Broughton Island, at the south-eastern tip of Baffin Island in the Davis Strait. Its unique geographical position makes it a gateway for a significant part of the water flowing into the Arctic Ocean, as well as offering privileged access to the deep waters (400 metres) close to shore. The centre is located in Inuit territory and was developed in collaboration with the Qikiqtani Inuit Association and the hamlet of Qikiqtarjuaq. The centre is managed by a member of the community who is on site all year round.

Fees

$250 / night

Accessibility

The research centre is accessible by commercial flights for staff, and by air or sea for the shipment of equipment. Two merchant ships (Desgagné Transarctik & NEAS) access the village once a year, usually in September. Commercial flights operated by Canadian North from Ottawa via Iqaluit reach the village all year round. Charter flights are also available.

Amenities

The centre includes communal areas (lounge and kitchen), shared showers and a laundry room. It can accommodate up to 10 people (soon to be 16) in four bedrooms. There is also a dry laboratory, a wet laboratory and indoor and outdoor storage areas. The centre is equipped with vehicles adapted to the different seasons, including a truck and two snowmobiles, making it easy to access the area in all seasons. Energy is supplied by heating oil. Drinking water is delivered by lorry and stored in tanks inside the centre, while wastewater is collected in the same way. Rubbish is collected by lorry, sorted and taken to the landfill site. Recycling collection is not offered on site.
