Serge Payette, a regular CEN member from Laval and retired professor, received the Grand Sage award from the FRQNT for his contributions to plant ecology, including his 4 volumes on the northern flora. To mark this recognition, a PhD student at the UQTR, Marie-Ange Moisan, was awarded an annual supplement to her PhD scholarship of $10,000 for the next 4 years.

Two other Grands Sages were recognized: Brenda Milner in Neuroscience by the FRQS and Guy Rocher in Education by the FRQSC. Two other doctoral students, Rachel Dufour of Concordia University and Audrey-Anne de Guise, also of UQTR, received annual supplements to their doctoral fellowships in health and education, respectively.
